Introduction to Mantrailing Workshop

Introduction to Mantrailing Workshop

Discover how to work together with your dog as they follow a specific person’s scent trail to find them.

Mantrailing gives your dog an outlet for their natural sniffing abilities while you learn to read their body language and support them along the trail. No previous experience is needed.

What’s included?

Each booking covers one dog and one handler and includes:

  • An introduction to mantrailing, including how to handle your dog’s long line.

  • Three introductory trails, adapted to your dog.

  • Individual guidance throughout, with time to ask questions.

The workshop lasts up to 3 hours, depending on the number of participants.

How the workshop runs

Dogs work one at a time, giving each dog space to concentrate. Between turns, your dog will need to rest comfortably in your vehicle.

Dogs remain on a long line throughout their trails. You’ll also be asked to take turns hiding for other dogs—it’s part of learning how mantrailing works.

Bringing someone with you?

You’re welcome to bring someone along. I recommend they get involved by hiding for other dogs rather than staying close to your dog during their trails. Having a familiar person nearby can distract your dog from learning to follow the trail.

Sensitive and reactive dogs

Dogs work individually, making mantrailing a good option for many sensitive or reactive dogs.

If your dog is worried around people or dogs, needs extra space, or has any other requirements, please contact me before booking so we can check that the workshop is suitable.

What to bring

  • Plenty of high-value food rewards.

  • Small, pocket-sized tubs or pots for the rewards.

  • Water and a bowl for your dog.

  • A Y-shaped harness.

  • A 5–10 metre long line.

Equipment is not provided.

Terrain and weather

The workshop takes place in woodland, where the ground can be wet, muddy and uneven. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.

We go ahead in the rain. Weather-related cancellation will only happen if it is unsafe to travel or the terrain becomes unsafe.

There are no toilet facilities at the venue.

After the workshop

Once you’ve completed your introduction, you can join our regular mantrailing sessions to continue developing your skills at your dog’s pace.
