Scent Detection Indication Training Course
Why Still( passive) Indication Training Matters
Most people think scent detection is about scent.
But scentwork is really about communication.
Your dog needs a clear way to say:
“I’ve found it.”
That behaviour is the indication.
Without a strong still indication, dogs often learn habits like:
- grabbing the target
- pawing or scratching
- barking
- getting frustrated
- rushing and guessing instead of searching properly
By teaching a still indication first, you build a solid foundation and your dog learns:
Stillness makes the reward happen.
And along the way, you’ll build something even bigger than scentwork skills…
✔ improved self-control
✔ calmer decision-making
✔ better emotional regulation
✔ clearer communication
✔ and a dog who can work without spiralling into chaos
This course is suitable for:
✅ complete beginners who want to start scent detection properly
✅ owners who have tried scentwork before and felt like they “failed”
✅ dogs who get over-aroused, frantic, or frustrated during searches
✅ anyone wanting a clean, clear indication foundation before adding scent
You don’t need experience. You don’t need special equipment.
This course is broken into small achievable steps, so you always know:
- what you’re training
- what success looks like
- when to progress
- and what to fix if things aren’t working
By the end of the course your dog will be able to:
⭐ offer a calm still indication on a target
⭐ hold position instead of grabbing or pawing
⭐ indicate with the object on the floor
⭐ indicate even when you move away
⭐ begin short structured searches at home
⭐ work with more focus and emotional control
